Located in the snowbelt created by Lake Erie, CCSG is in the western-most part of New York State. We are approximately halfway between Buffalo, New York and Erie, Pennsylvania.
Between the 5 clubs in Chautauqua County, we represent almost 3,400 family memberships, 5,800 total individuals, and over 5,300 snowmobiles.
Throughout the history of the Cherry Creek Sno-Goers trail grooming has been a high priority. Here is a history of the grooming equipment purchased through the years. It is notable that the club has added or upgraded equipment consistently since 1993 through 2024 .
1969- Club Purchased a Yamaha wide track for trail grooming.
1970- A group of volunteers, including Gordon Brookman built a pull behind drag for snowmobiles.
1987-Purchased new Alpine and Bombardier Drag. Kept in Service until 2000.
1993- Purchased a Arctic Cat Quad Trac with a disc drag. Used for 2 years.
We dug out the pull behind drag (since registered as CCSG Drag #1) from Gordon Brookman’s barn and started using it again after 20 years! Gordon passed away soon after that and we were very fortunate to be able to save this piece of our history.
Purchased a 6’ valley drag new in the box which was used behind tractors and Super Imps until 2006.
1994- Built a pull behind drag with 6 skis and a grader blade and remote control. State of the art for the time!
Purchased 3 Frenchie Drags for use behind club volunteers personal sled. Frenchie drags were designed and built by Armand Gauthier out of White River Junction Vermont, and were the first inexpensive drag that was effectively pulled with personal snowmobiles. Armand was an extremely colorful character and the drags were called Frenchies because he was French Canadian. The reason the drags were inexpensive was he made them out of mostly scrap metal. They made quite an influence in Western NY as it allowed budget strapped clubs to start grooming their trails and then upgrading from there.
Purchased a 1988 Alpine II groomer for St Lawrence County, and they threw in an 8’ wide roller drag which we used as our first large drag in future years.
1995- Fred Croscut, a County Legislator and a big supporter of snowmobiling, donated a set of half tracks that go on a farm tractor. Joe Gelenser installed them on his tractor and groomed trails with no cab. He would be out in the middle of the night with a snowmobile suit and helmet, by himself in the most desolate areas of our trails. This was our first attempt at a larger groomer and for the time and what it cost it was quite effective.
Purchased a 1995 Polaris wide track and used a 48” Frenchie Drag behind it until 2004, when it went to the Cherry Creek Fire Department as a rescue vehicle.
Made a second trip to Vermont and purchased 5 more Frenchie Drags for our club and another 7 for other NY Clubs. We became Armand’s best customer and these drags were a common sight zipping around the trail system.
1996- Based on the success of the half track tractor, the Club purchased an IH 574 tractor with a cab on it and installed the half tracks on it. While it had limitations on steep hills and deep snow, it was the first 8’ groomer in Western NY and was a welcome change to be inside a heated cab with a radio. We still use the tractor for mowing, pounding posts and pulling a dump wagon for hauling gravel.
1997- Purchased our first 2 man enclosed cab groomer, a 1980 Super Imp from the Boonville NY area. This machine groomed our trails until the end of the 2009 season.
1998- Built our first multi blade 8’ drag, which was the 18th drag we had purchased or built. Used behind the 574 with half tracks.
Purchased a second Super Imp from St. Lawrence County, used until 2005.
Purchased our first Tucker Sno-Cat, a 1980 with a gas engine from the Shop Industrial in Lively Ontario. It came with a drag and it was used until 2005. It was sold to a club in Allegany County.

Purchased a set of Soucy Tracks and Blade for use with a rented tractor which went into service in January 2011. This increased our fleet to 9 groomers from 7 which allowed us to groom all of our trails in an overnight timeframe when conditions allow. This was a turning point in grooming excellence as very few clubs have the amount of equipment required to do this.
2011- Purchased our first long track, extended cab Tucker from Idaho. It had 580 hours on it when we got it and expect it will be a long-term machine for us. Currently used in the State Land and Towns Corners.
